칠레 아타카마 사막이 전 세계 패스트 패션 산업에서 발생한 의류 폐기물의 거대한 쓰레기장으로 변모하며 심각한 환경 오염과 사회적 문제를 야기하고 있다.
칠레 북부의 아타카마 사막이 전 세계에서 유입된 중고 및 미판매 의류의 불법 투기장으로 전락했다. 매년 약 6만 톤의 의류가 칠레 이키케 항구의 자유무역지대를 통해 수입되지만, 이 중 절반 이상인 약 3만 9천 톤이 재판매되지 못한 채 사막에 불법 투기된다. 합성 섬유로 제작된 의류는 자연 분해되는 데 수백 년이 걸리며, 미세 플라스틱과 유독 물질을 배출할 뿐만 아니라 빈번한 화재로 인해 지역 사회의 건강과 생태계를 심각하게 위협하고 있다.
